Earthquake Tips

How ready are you and your home in the event that we have another shake?

It's not a pleasant thought at all, but it is only realistic that we protect our homes, water and electricity which in turns protects us.

Here at The Connection Company, we value your safety so we have offered a few tips from our office which you are welcome to use in your home or business.

  • Learn how to turn your mains power, water and gas off. This is vitally important in the event of a civil emergency where wires and pipes may be damaged. Prevent your home from having it's own disaster by speaking to our team - we can advise you how to do this safely.
  • Have a plan - if things turn pear shaped again, where can you go to keep safe? What can you do in your home and community to help out safely with the recovery effort?
  • Chat with your family. Where will you meet after a disaster to check that everybody is safe? Mobile networks may be out of order, so you will need a plan.
  • Consult a master builder to work out areas of weakness, and areas of strength in your home. This is vital to ensure that you know where your safe spots are.
  • Chat to our master electricians to ensure that your wiring and electronics are protected against power surges.
  • Install Data Protection or a Power Protection system in your home or business, as a backup supply. This isn't extra spending, it's a investment.
  • Secure your hot water cylinder! Keep yourself out of hot water and secure these to a wall or frame. Also remember to get them regularly serviced to ensure that there aren't any issues.
  • Bolt bookcases, wardrobes etcetera to walls, and put latches on cupboards. Avoid keeping heavy or breakable items on top shelves.
  • Stick vases and precious items down with Blu Tack or Seismic wax. These are also great behind frames to protect your pictures from banging against walls, avoiding expensive damage.
  • Keep a supply of canned food and water, a first aid kit, battery powered radio and torches, and spare batteries! Dust masks and goggles are a good idea if you are in an area prone to liquefaction.
  • In the event of an earthquake, it is not recommended that door frames are used. Many sources recommend that people crouch in the foetal position underneath a sturdy table or bed frame, ensuring that there are air pockets in case the building collapses.

We all hope that we will not experience another disaster such as this, but we can only prepare in case. Our team have been vital in assisting with the Canterbury Quake Cleanup. We worked with USAR doing equipment retrieval after the 22 February, and have worked for a large number of insurers and contractors since then.

We are happy to offer whatever advice that we can for you to Quake safe your home in regard to your electricity. Remember that we also offer power protection and data backup systems.
